Mogwai - Musical style

Mogwai's style has been influenced by bands including MC5, My Bloody Valentine, Fugazi, and post-rock pioneers Slint. During 2004, the band supported tours by two major influences, Pixies and The Cure. Mogwai's style has easily identifiable connections to genres like shoegazing, math rock, art rock and occasionally instrumental metal. Douglas Wolk, writing for SPIN in 1999 said of the band "Their compositions have gotten increasingly drawn-out and austere over time, sometimes barely more than a single arpeggiated chord or two evolving for ten minutes or more, whisperingly brutal in a way that recalls Slint more than any other band".

Mogwai - (2006 - 2010)

In 2006, Mogwai provided the soundtrack to the film Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait, with the soundtrack album released the following year. The band also collaborated with Clint Mansell on the soundtrack to The Fountain in 2006.

The band's 2008 "Batcat" EP featured a collaboration with Roky Erickson, with Erickson providing vocals on "Devil Rides".


Mogwai are also featured in the 2009 post-rock documentary Introspective.

In 2010 Mogwai announced the release of their first live film, premiered at the Glasgow Film Festival in February 2010 and live album, "Special Moves". Both contain content from their Brooklyn shows during their 2008 and 2009 American tour. Braithwaite also stated that the band were working on material for a new album for release in early 2011. In January 2010 the band auctioned off several items including the piano used by Burns during their 2006-2007 world tour in aid of the 2010 Haiti earthquake appeal. The band also donated an exclusive track to the PEACE project in April 2010 in support of Amnesty International.

Mogwai - Rock Action

Introduction:

"Rock Action" is the third full-length studio album by Scottish post-rock band Mogwai. The album's title comes from Iggy Pop's nickname for his Stooges bandmate, Scott Asheton. Rock Action brought with it some changes to Mogwai's sound that they would continue to develop later, including the use of electronic instruments. While song structures on this CD are typical of the band in most cases and respects, some of the contrasting dynamics have been toned down slightly and many of the songs focus more on texture than on structure. The single "Dial: Revenge" fills much the same role that "Cody" did on Come on Die Young, featuring Welsh vocals from Gruff Rhys of Super Furry Animals; the inside cover is unfolded, part of the logo for Mwng, an album by Super Furry Animals released the previous year, can be seen. The sound of Rock Action is somewhat less dark than previous works, but maintains Mogwai's cryptic cynicism.

Mogwai - Come on Die Young

Introduction:

"Come on Die Young", also known as CODY, is the second full-length studio album by the Scottish post-rock band Mogwai, released on 29 March 1999 by Chemikal Underground. It is somewhat different from the rest of Mogwai's work because of its reserved tone. The album's second track, "Cody" is much more like a traditional pop song than most of the band's repertoire. Still slow and meandering, it features an uncharacteristically distinct melody, slide guitar and relatively prominent vocals. Much of Come on Die Young consists of slow, quiet, drum-driven tracks containing tense, feedback-laden crescendos and occasionally ambient textures. Near the end of the album, the bombastic "Christmas Steps" breaks away from this quiet tension and displays a return to Mogwai's more well-known distortion-heavy dynamics. The album's title derives from a Glasgow gang of the same name.

Mogwai - Kicking a Dead Pig

Introduction:

"Kicking a Dead Pig" is a remix album from Scottish band Mogwai consisting of remixes of previously released tracks, primarily from Young Team, by various artists, including Alec Empire, My Bloody Valentine, and Max Tundra. The album was originally released in 1998 on the label Eye-Q, who shortly became bust. The album then became relatively hard to find, until "the master tapes mysteriously appeared on Chemikal Underground's doorstep". The album was then re-released on the Chemikal Underground label in 2001, with an additional two tracks forming the basis for a second CD of Mogwai Fear Satan remixes, from My Bloody Valentine, and μ-Ziq. In 1998, the album was licensed by Eye-Q to the now defunct label, Jetset. The version Jetset released contained all of the Mogwai Fear Satan remixes on a second disc.

Introduction:

"Mogwai Young Team" also known as "Young Team" is the debut studio album by Scottish post-rock band Mogwai. The album "Mogwai Young Team" was recorded in Summer 1997 at MCM Studios in Hamilton, Scotland, and was produced by Paul Savage and Andy Miller. It features limited instrumentation, consisting mainly of guitar, bass and drums, although other instruments can sometimes be heard throughout the album, such as glockenspiel, piano, "With Portfolio", "A Cheery Wave from Stranded Youngsters" and flute. The "MYT" logo found inside the cover was created by Adam Piggot.The MYT logo is based on a popular mark used by young gangs in the Glasgow/Lanarkshire area of Scotland, a "Youth Team" is specific to an area "Fairhill Youth Team" for example. The Japanese sign on the cover reads "Fuji Bank". Mogwai Young Team was re-released in May 2008 on the Chemikal Underground label, packaged as a remaster of the original album with a second disc containing rare tracks from the Young Team sessions and live recordings.
